Children fall often. If your child has fallen and hit their tooth, our dentist, Dr. Hawkins, is happy to help you care for your child’s smile and handle the situation. It’s important to stay calm and keep a cool head. It’s also best to do everything you can do keep your child calm and collected as well. Then, it’s best to do these things in the following situations:

-When your child knocks a tooth loose: Call our office to find out how to proceed. Your child might need a dental X-ray to make sure the tooth can heal on its own. If everything looks OK, you will need to give your child soft foods for the next few days to allow the tooth to reimplant into the jawbone.

-When your child knocks a baby tooth out: There is no need to worry. The lost tooth might make eating troublesome and it might affect the speech, but it won’t cause permanent damage. It will soon be replaced by a permanent tooth.

-When your child knocks a permanent tooth out: Retrieve the tooth, but only hold it by the crown. Then, rinse the tooth with warm water, but don’t scrub it. Call our office immediately and schedule an emergency appointment. Keep the tooth alive by putting it in a cup of milk or a cup of saltwater. Bring the tooth with you to the appointment.
