So you came in for a cavity filling but now Dr. Hawkins is telling you that might not be quite enough—your tooth is too damaged, the decay too advanced. Will you lose your tooth? Not so fast: we offer porcelain inlays and onlays for our Houston patients who need a restoration that’s a little stronger and more comprehensive than a simple composite filling. These restorations are similar to a crown and usually made of the same type of porcelain material as a dental crown. The big difference is that they don’t cover the entire tooth the way a crown does.
Inlays are a lot like fillings in that they are placed inside the points of your tooth, while onlays can cover one or more cusp, or point, for a strengthening and reconstructive power composites just can’t give. And because they don’t cover the entire tooth, they are more conservative than a crown. Porcelain inlays and onlays—they’re a win-win restoration!
